About this Talk
Background:
Mentorship programs help guide high-potential employees who have the capability, aspiration, and commitment to hold leadership roles in the future. A mentoring experience is described to highlight the qualities that drive effective and inspirational leadership.
Method:
Monthly mentoring connections with expert leaders were set up for 2 years. A specific discussion topic was proposed at each meeting: risks/opportunities of a leader, time/energy balancing, dealing with failures, pursuing the company objectives, effective speaking, motivation and persistence, and inspiration of a leader.
Results:
Genetics plays a fundamental role: leaders have in common a competitive innate component, a desire to please, and a brave attitude. Leaders may emerge from those who are curious, have an open mindset, are visionary, contribute, and have visibility. Diligently organizing the personal calendar to book time for company business, personal career, networking, and family is recommended for a good work-life balance. Practice, reflection, listening, and proactivity are fundamental to reversing failures into learning. Before others, leaders need to inspire themselves by celebrating success, keeping their motivations high, driving to do well, and following goals with passion.
Conclusion:
A mentoring program represents a business tool for leadership development that helps companies to trigger a smooth generational change through natural exchange and mutual growth.
