Ikigai: A concept to achieve a joyful and effective career as a statistician
A Talk by Prof. Nuno Sepúlveda PhD (Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science | Visiting Professor | Head of Immune-Stats Group, Warsaw University of Technology)
About this Talk
Ikigai is a Japanese concept that would appear to promote a long and meaningful life in Japan, specifically, on the Island of Okinawa. The concept gained visibility in the West due to the classification of this island as one of the 5 initial National Geographic’s Blue Zones (regions in the world where people live exceptionally long and in good health). Ikigai translates into English as “the reason for which one wakes up in the morning” and sets its foundation on five pillars: (i) start small; (ii) releasing your ego; (iii) harmony and sustainability; (iv) the joy of little things; and (v) being in the here and now.
In this talk, I will discuss how these five pillars can be integrated into career progression and personal development in order to achieve a joyful and meaningful career. My discussion will go through some personal stories from my experience as a statistician for more than 20 years. I will also argue that the integration of these pillars into the statistical activity itself is at the core of what it means to be an effective statistician in practice.
